Quarter Master Issues, Army of the West,
last Quarter 1861

The table below is an abridgement of "Abstract of Issues of Clothing, Camp and Garrison Equipage During the fourth Quarter 1861 Major W M Montgomery Q.M. C. S. Army"(1) which can be found on www.footnote.com. I have tabulated the issues of clothing and omitted the Camp and Garrison Equipage.

Major W. M. Montgomery served as Quarter Master to Brigadier General Benjamin McCulloch who commanded the Army of the West. Ben McCulloch had led his Army to victory at Wilson's Creek or Oak Hills, and was now busily recruiting soldiers from Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas in order to stop the advance of Federal troops into Arkansas.

The document is useful as it not only tells us what the troops were issued with during this period, but also shows the sequence of the availability of various types of clothing.

By examining the service records for the officers to whom the issues were made, it is sometimes possible to find the signed "Special Requisition" for the items which may show more detail. This is the case for the second order signed by Capt John W Whitfield, of Whitfields Batt Texas Vols, Co D. This requisition (2) shows that 100 of the shirts were made of flannel and the remaining 81 were made of Hickory cloth. (Hickory cloth is a twilled cloth, similar to denim but softer and usually of narrow blue and white stripes, sometimes brown and white, and occasionally the same colors were made in a checked pattern. See image at right for example of modern blue and white stripe Hickory cloth.) What color were the flannel shirts, your guess is as good as mine but gray is probably the most logical choice; red and blue are also possibilities.

A similar "Special Requisition" for the items issued to Capt W H Brooks of Stirmans Cavalry battalion on 5 Oct 1861 exists, and confirms the issue of flannel shirts.(3)

The "Special Requisition" of 29 Nov 1861 for Capt John Griffith lists the 12 shirts as "over shirts" but no reference as to material used.(4)
